Global War on Terrorism: 1st Battalion, 127th Field Artillery

With the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Operation Noble Eagle required Guardsmen of the 1st Battalion, 127th Field Artillery, commanded by LTC Russ Conrad, to participate in airport, military installation, and other critical installation protection within the United States. The soldiers served at Ft. Riley and Ft. Leavenworth, manning the gates, providing patrols, and conducting common task training. They were released from duty in December of 2001.

On June 16, 2005 Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 1st Battalion, 127th Field Artillery, based in Ottawa, was alerted for Operation Iraqi Freedom and in July mobilized at Ft. Lewis, WA. Commander of the unit was MAJ Noel Grubb, Ellinwood. Sent to Camp Travis, Iraq on July 1, 2005 they assumed the force protection mission previously held by Battery C, 1st Battalion, 151st Field Artillery of the Minnesota Army National Guard inside the International Zone where the unit provided PSD protection for the American Ambassador, United Aide Mission to Iraq’s Ambassador, the Anti-Terrorism Task Force, and any other Embassy personnel requiring movement inside and outside of the international zone.

They returned home on Oct. 19, 2006 and a welcome home ceremony was held at Lee Arena on the Washburn University campus, Topeka.
