Global War on Terrorism: 226th Engineer Company

As Operation Iraqi Freedom unfolded, the 144-soldieer 226th Engineer Company of Augusta and Winfield was mobilized on January 2, 2003. Commanded by CPT David Burk, the unit was first sent to its mobilization station, then to Camp Riifjan, Kuwait, before finally arriving at Camp Udairi, Kuwait. On March 22, 2003, they received the order to move into Iraq behind coalition combat forces. The next day the unit crossed the border as the lead company of a battalion deployment into Iraq.

For the next 60 days the unit conducted continuous combat and construction operations from a defensive perimeter in southern Iraq, operating farther forward than any other unit in the battalion. On May 24, 2003 they were ordered back into Kuwait, where they began refitting and conducting intensive maintenance operations. Here the order came for their deployment home, and they arrived back in Kansas on July 4, Independence Day, 2003.
