Global War on Terrorism: 2nd Battalion, 137th Infantry

On February 4, 2002, the 2d Battalion, 137th Infantry was mobilized in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. With them were 28 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 161st Field Artillery. Sent first to the Kansas Regional Training Center, Salina, then to Fort Stewart, Georgia, the 400-man battalion, commanded by LTC Danny R. Hay, was ultimately sent to Germany for a six month tour of duty.

Five hundred soldiers of the 2d Battalion, 137th Infantry were mobilized as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in August of 2005, with the deployment ceremony held on Aug. 28 at Bramlage Coliseum, Kansas State University, Manhattan. Headquartered in Kansas City, the battalion was commanded by LTC James Trafton, Kansas City. Units were located in Wichita and Lawrence.

By way of Fort Sill, Oklahoma, the battalion was sent to Camp Slayer, near Baghdad, Iraq. There it was responsible for operating the Joint Visitor’s Bureau and for providing security for the many high level visitors that passed through Iraq. They were also responsible for area security for the Joint Visitor’s Bureau and areas near Baghdad.

The approximately 450 soldiers were welcomed home on Nov. 9, 2006 with a ceremony at the Kansas Expocentre, Topeka.

On Feb. 20, 2006, Sergeant Jessie Davila, Company A, 2d Battalion, 137th Infantry died when his vehicle was hit by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) (roadside bomb). He was the fourth Kansas Guardsman killed in the war on terrorism.

The 2d Battalion, 137th Infantry, now a combined arms battalion with two Infantry and two Armor companies was activated for a peacekeeping mission on the horn of Africa in 2009.
