Global War on Terrorism: 42d Rainbow Division

Fifty soldiers of the Kansas Army National Guard were activated to deploy with the New York National Guard’s 42nd Rainbow Division on Aug. 18, 2004 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The Guardsmen were drawn from various units, based on their Military Occupational Skills, in what was the first of the “levies” for deployments. Some of these included machinist, fuel and electric system repairer, power generator repairer, test equipment operator, electronic missile system repairer, and automated logistics specialist. The Kansas Guardsmen would be integrated into the New York division, and spend their year in Iraq as fillers for the New York Guard.
