Global War on Terrorism: 731st Transportation Company

The 731st Transportation Company, Dodge City, Liberal, and Hays, was mobilized in early March, 2003, going initially to the Kansas Regional Training Center, Salina, and then to Ft. Carson, CO. Commanding the unit was CPT Andy Trager.

Sent to Iraq, the unit performed a variety of haul missions with their 915A1 tractors and M872 trailers. As 2004 began, the 731st had its tour of duty extended as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, so that it would be on duty for 15 months. The unit had the mission of hauling dry and refrigerated containerized cargo, general cargo, bulk water, and bulk petroleum products.

Deployed in March of 2003, they returned home to Kansas on June 12, 2004. Later commanded by CPT Leonard Carper, Topeka, the unit logged more than 2 million miles and used more than 580,000 gallons of fuel during their deployment. On several occasions, the convoys had been the targets of rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bombs.

Over 180 soldiers of the 731st Transportation Company received the call again in 2006, as the unit was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit was headquartered in Larned, with detachments in Hays, Liberal, and Wichita, and was a part of the 287th Sustainment Brigade, a newly-formed unit in the Kansas National Guard.

Departure ceremonies were held on Nov. 26, 2006 at the Highway Patrol Auditorium, Salina. The unit then conducted pre-deployment training, made the long journey to Iraq, and was still performing its duties at year’s end.
