Operation Spartan Shield

Operation Spartan Shield is the name for operations in the Middle East designed to deter aggression, stabilize the Middle East, and build partnerships throughout the region.

Starting in 2017, the Kansas National Guard was heavily involved in supporting this mission. In 2017, the Headquarters, 35th Infantry Division took over as the command element of this mission. The 635th Regional Support Group and elements of the 2-130 Field Artillery also deployed in support of Operation Spartan Shield (OSS) and Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) in 2017.

In 2018 the 2-137th Combined Arms Battalion (along with elements of the 1-161st Field Artillery) and the 1-108th Aviation Battalion deployed to round out the ready units stationed in Kuwait. These units are OSS’s reserve force, ready to react to multiple contingencies within the region.
